I’ve always been inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s designs, but also his personal iconography—the elements of style he placed on and around himself to create and express himself.
When I learned the theme for the 2023 Met Gala would pay tribute to Lagerfeld’s legacy, I asked Daniel Roseberry at Schiaparelli to create a portrait of Karl through this personal iconography. With the extraordinary artisans of the Schiaparelli atelier, Daniel crafted a sculpture of the iconic fan out of black glass mirror, embroidered with Karl’s drawings of so many of his signatures – his sunglasses, a camellia, a bow, his dear cat Choupette – all rendered in black rhinestone stardust A corset of stardust rhinestones and glass beads, a skirt of 480,000 micro glass bugles set horizontally, and to top it all off, Choupette perched on my hand. – Jordan Roth
