Met Gala 2022: "Gilded Glamour"

When the brilliant Thom Browne first suggested the ideas that would become this extraordinary creation, I asked ‘What made you think of this for me?’ And he said, ‘because there’s no one else like you.’

Of course, that made me cry. What emerged in the space between us was a celebration of the individual through the uniform, explored through the tuxedo—a uniform itself)—exploded into a singular form inspired by the Gogotte natural rock formations, no two of which are alike. In an early fitting, as I let the coat fall from my shoulders, we saw it transform itself into a bustle, moving from a masculine uniform to a feminine silhouette. All of these stages of this piece are part of the unique expression of an authentic self.

So much of what Thom does starts from the idea of the suit, which is a charged form for me. The suit is the uniform of masculinity: terrain that I have, at times, bounded away from. Thom takes that form and deconstructs it, explodes it. He evolves it in a way that articulates my relationship with it. Thom and I wanted to explore the tension between uniformity and individuality. What we wear is how we feel our way through the world, and those ideas can be explored through the tuxedo.” – Jordan Roth
