Jordan Roth

Red

"An offering of grace to each other"

Description

Central to Jordan Roth’s artistic practice is the medium of fashion, and in Red, Roth channels the Dior Haute Couture empress gown by John Galliano, exhibited inside the Musée du Louvre’s Napoleon Apartments, overlooking the Cour Marly.

Atop four dress form sculptures cast from Roth’s torso, projectors conjure an image of the Dior gown onto a solitary garment, recreating it while also imbuing it with a subtle beating and pulsing kinetic vitality. Roth is laced by the guides into the illuminated gown. Together, Roth and the dress take on new dimensions of meaning—the act of projection is a symbolic metaphor of fashion as a catalyst for transformation, and an exploration of the ways we project and perceive. The projected image then slowly dissolves to white as the garment begins its own transformation.

"Guides lace me into this dress, and it begins to transform itself. Embellishments, color, and textures start to dissolve, revealing the white dress beneath." - Jordan Roth

"The walk was so moving, to get to experience individual humans. Human to human, eye to eye. " - Jordan Roth
